VW Passat 2003 Cooling System Fault: P2400 and P2181 Diagnosis & Symptoms

Model: VW Passat 2003 Fault Code: P2181 Posted: 2014-03-09 15:10

I recently scanned my 2003 VW Passat 1.8L and received two diagnostic trouble codes: (i) P2400 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected: Pump Control Circuit/Open, and (ii) P2180 - Cooling System Performance Issue. The vehicle shows a normal temperature reading of around 90°C when driving, but at certain points during operation, I experience a rattling noise from the engine, followed by difficulty in acceleration. When this occurs, the noise stops after I turn off the engine and restart it — upon restarting, the dashboard temperature gauge jumps to 195°C. This behavior suggests an intermittent cooling system issue. What steps should I take to diagnose and resolve these problems? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Inspect the three wires and their connector at the Leak Detection Pump (LDP), as well as the LDP unit itself. Avoid operating the vehicle — symptoms indicate potential overheating. Also check coolant level, radiator fan operation, and thermostat function to rule out mechanical or thermal failures.

The vehicle is not actually overheating; the temperature gauge reads normally under regular driving conditions, with no signs of excessive heating or cooling issues. The intermittent noise and sudden temperature spike upon restart may point to a sensor or electrical fault rather than a full system failure.
