VW Jetta 1999 Check Engine Light Blinking with Multiple Misfire Codes (P0300-P0303, P0131)

Hi there, I own a 1999 VW Jetta with automatic transmission and over 100,000 miles. Last night, the check engine light started blinking, and my car suddenly lost power when I pressed the gas pedal. The vehicle now only reaches about 20 mph under acceleration. The exhaust smells like burning, and the engine shakes noticeably when starting and running. I used an OBD2 scanner to retrieve five diagnostic trouble codes: 1. P0300 – Random Cylinder Misfire 2. P0301 – Cylinder #1 Misfire 3. P0302 – Cylinder #2 Misfire 4. P03-than-#3 Misfire 5. P0131 – O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 1) All of these codes appeared suddenly during a drive yesterday. What do these codes mean? These codes indicate multiple cylinder misfires, with the O2 sensor showing consistently low voltage. Start with basic checks: has the engine been tuned up recently? Is fuel pressure adequate? Are spark plugs and ignition components in good condition? Has the timing belt failed? A flashing check engine light typically signals severe misfiring.

If the O2 sensor is stuck at low voltage, it sends false data to the Engine Control Module (ECM). The ECM interprets this as a lean condition and increases fuel injection pulse width, causing the engine to run too rich—this directly leads to misfires. Use an OBD2 scan tool to monitor Bank 1 Sensor 1 in real time. If the sensor is stuck at low voltage, that’s likely the root cause of the misfiring.
