VW Caddy 2005 2.0 SDI Diesel - P1440 EGR Valve Power Stage Open Circuit Diagnosis

Model: VW Caddy Fault Code: P1440 Posted: 2010-08-18 07:10

Vehicle: VW Caddy Van Year: 2005 Engine: 2.0L SDI Diesel Mileage: 101,000 miles The exhaust fault light has come on. After investigation, the issue was traced to the EGR system. A new EGR valve was installed, and the diagnostic code was cleared. However, within approximately 20 miles, the fault light reappeared. Using a code reader, two faults were detected: - 17848 -096 CAN Bus: EGR Valve (N18) Open Circuit — P1440 - 16787 -112 CAN Bus: EGR Valve (N18) Malfunction — P0403 The P1440 code is listed as 'EGR Valve Power Stage Open'. Could someone please clarify this in practical terms? Specifically, what does 'EGR Valve Power Stage Open' mean in real-world terms? What component should I replace or check? Thanks for the help.

You need to check the EGR control circuit — including wiring and connectors. Ensure that no wires were damaged, disconnected, or left unconnected during the replacement of the EGR valve. A broken or missing wire in this circuit can cause a 'power stage open' condition and trigger P1440.
