VW Jetta GLi 2.0T (2006) with PO0089 and PO2293: Fuel Pressure Issues & Engine Cut-Off at High Altitude
I own a 2006 VW Jetta GLi 2.0T with a 6-speed DSG transmission. While driving cross-country on I-70 in Colorado at speeds of 75–80 mph, under a load of two bikes on the roof and at an elevation of approximately 6,000 feet, the vehicle experienced sudden power loss for 1 to 2 seconds—repeatedly every minute or so, increasing to once every ~15 seconds. The issue persisted even when slowing to 60 mph; it did not resolve with reduced load. This was not a cylinder misfire but rather an abrupt engine cut-off. After pulling off the freeway in Colorado (BumFuckEgyptCO), the problem continued under minimal load (10–20 mph, steady speed). I used a code reader and found two diagnostic trouble codes: PO0089 and PO2293—both related to fuel pressure and delivery. Over the next 1,800 miles, the issue occurred only once more before resolving on its own. The vehicle has 80,000 miles total. I had previously had the timing belt and fuel filter professionally serviced one day prior to this trip. At around 50,000 miles, a warranty recall service replaced the camshaft, cam follower, and high-pressure fuel pump. Given the symptoms—sudden power loss, hot ambient temperature (103°F), and recurring fuel delivery issues—I believe the root cause is fuel starvation or an intermittent fuel cut-off. I am seeking advice on what specific component or repair should be addressed to resolve this issue permanently.
