P0008 OBD2 Fault Code in 2009 Chevrolet Traverse: Reluctor Wheel Wear vs. Guide Failure at 87K Miles

Model: Traverse Fault Code: P0008 Posted: 2019-08-14 18:28

At 66,000 miles, the GM dealer replaced the chain and tensor but did not replace the guides. The P0008 diagnostic trouble code reappeared at 87,000 miles. After inspection by a GM dealership in Puerto Rico, they identified the issue as a faulty reluctor wheel. I sent the crankshaft to a machine shop for measurement, which showed a dimension of 24.7 mm. According to GM service bulletin data, a properly functioning reluctor wheel should measure between 25 and 26 mm — measured from the end of the machined surface of the crankshaft throw to the edge of the open space in the reluctor (approximately three and one-half teeth). The discrepancy of 0.3 mm suggests either excessive wear on the reluctor wheel or failure of the guide components. Given that the guides were not replaced during the previous service, I am seeking clarification: between these two potential causes — reluctor wear or guide degradation — which is more likely responsible for triggering the P0008 code to reappear?
