P1780 Fault Code in 1999 Toyota Camry V6: Parking/Neutral Switch Issue and Repair Guidance

Model: Toyota Camry Fault Code: P1780 Posted: 2007-07-03 08:29

I recently received a P1780 diagnostic code on my 1999 Toyota Camry V6 with an automatic transmission. The code indicates a malfunction in the parking/neutral position switch. I replaced the entire switch, but the fault code persists — it now shows that 'Part 1 of 2' is not resolved. Could someone clarify what 'Part 1' refers to, especially since I replaced the full switch? Additionally, does 'Part 2' refer to the switch itself or another component? Any technical insight would be greatly appreciated.

The parking/neutral position switch detects the shift lever position and sends signals to the Engine Control Module (ECM). For a basic explanation, after replacing the switch, common issues that may still cause P1780 include a faulty wiring harness, damaged connector, or a malfunctioning ECM. These components are often overlooked but can be key factors in resolving the code.
