P0405 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Fault in 2012 VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI - DIY Diagnosis and Repair Advice

Model: Tiguan 2.0 TDI Fault Code: P0403 Posted: 2016-10-05 11:21

Hi everyone, Five days ago, my check engine light came on unexpectedly in my 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI. Using the Torque diagnostic tool, I retrieved fault code P0403 — Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control System Malfunction. I've attempted to clear this code twice, but it has reappeared each time. I'm planning to visit a certified VW dealership on Friday, October 7th, 2016, for further inspection. However, the check engine light disappeared today — during a rainy period at my location — and hasn't returned since. This inconsistency makes me wonder whether the issue is truly with the EGR valve or if it could be caused by faulty wiring. Replacing the EGR valve in this model is expensive due to its position behind the engine, and I'm concerned that the dealership might recommend a costly repair without confirming the actual root cause. Can anyone advise on how to diagnose this issue at home? Are there any simple tests or tools I can use before visiting a professional? Thanks for your insights!

Hi, I've experienced the same intermittent check engine light on my 2012 VW Tiguan. The issue comes and goes unpredictably. I'd really appreciate any updates — did you end up going to a VW dealership? What was their diagnosis? I took mine in, and they identified code P040300 ($131B/4891) and suggested faulty wiring as the likely cause. Any confirmation from your experience would be very helpful.

Hello, It's interesting — the problem went away just as quickly as it appeared. I tried using a diesel fuel additive (STP) to clean the EGR system, and after adding it to my tank, the issue disappeared. I now believe the EGR valve was clogged and the cleaner helped restore proper function. Additionally, I switched to refueling at BP stations — I suspect the change in fuel quality may have contributed to the improvement.
