P0420 Diagnostic Explanation for Skoda Fabia - What Does Bank 1 Mean?

Model: Skoda Fabia Fault Code: P0420 Posted: 2010-09-28 02:54

Hi everyone, I'm looking for clarification on the P042-0 error code appearing in my Skoda Fabia (code: 16804 P0420 006, indicating a catalytic converter system issue for Bank 1). My main question is: does 'Bank 1' refer to the sensor located before or after the catalytic converter? I understand that 'bank' relates to engine cylinder configuration, but I'd like confirmation on how this applies specifically in my Skoda Fabia model.

Neither... Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine where cylinder 1 is located. If you have an inline-4 engine, there's only one bank. Based on this, it's likely that your catalytic converter is faulty and requires replacement.

Ah, I see now — thanks for the clear explanation! It sounds like a more involved repair than I initially thought, but I'll proceed with replacing the catalytic converter after confirming the diagnosis.
