P0118 and P0181 Fault Codes - 2002 Kia Sedona Starting Issues and Low Idle
I own a 2002 Kia Sedona, which has been reliable up until now. Recently, the vehicle has started throwing diagnostic trouble codes P0118 and P0181. These are both circuit-related fault codes: P0118 relates to the Coolant Temperature Sensor, while P0181 is associated with the Fuel Temperature Sensor. The main issue I'm experiencing is difficulty starting the engine. After cranking without success, a strong gasoline smell emerges from the engine bay. After several attempts and some time passing, the car eventually starts. Once running, it operates at an abnormally low idle speed—between 500 and 900 RPM—and does not stall under these conditions. The engine does not overheat even during hot weather or extended driving. However, the problem has worsened recently: on a humid day in Ontario, the cooling fan ran continuously—a behavior I've never observed before. This sudden onset of symptoms suggests a developing issue. Given that both codes are circuit-based, I'm wondering whether the sensors themselves are faulty or if there's another underlying electrical or mechanical cause. Since I perform all my own repairs and avoid professional mechanics, any clear diagnosis or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your insights!
