2003 Santa Fe P0510 Throttle Position Switch Circuit Malfunction - Idle Surge and RPM Fluctuations

Model: Santa Fe Fault Code: P0510 Posted: 2016-04-21 08:15

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and hoping for some help with a recurring issue on my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. The vehicle has triggered a P0510 diagnostic trouble code, which indicates a 'Closed Throttle Position Switch Circuit Malfunction'. On startup, the engine idles at around 3000 RPM and only drops to normal levels (800-900 RPM) after warming up for 2-3 minutes. During this initial phase, I have to quickly shift into drive to reduce engine speed. Once warmed up, the car idles normally but exhibits noticeable surging—fluctuating between 200 and 300 RPM at idle when in Drive or Park. Additionally, when accelerating, the vehicle hesitates briefly before suddenly surging, causing a lurching sensation. I'm looking for accurate information about what causes P0510 on a 2003 Santa Fe, especially related to throttle position sensor circuit issues and how this might be linked to the RPM surges during idle and acceleration. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, bwrum

I'm guessing this is a 2003 Santa Fe with a 3.5L V6 and automatic transmission. You're close on the code description—just missing the key term 'Circuit' in 'Malfunction'. A wiring diagram and a digital volt-ohmmeter (DVOM) will be essential for diagnosing this issue accurately.
