P0442 Code in 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT: Possible Electrical Issue or Undetected Leak?

Model: Pontiac Grand AM Fault Code: P0442 Posted: 2015-05-03 09:39

My 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT (3.4L V6) has been displaying a persistent P0442 diagnostic trouble code for some time. I've already replaced the gas cap and the purge solenoid under the hood, but the issue remains unresolved. Recently, I took it to a mechanic who performed a smoke test on the evaporative emission system—no leaks were detected. The technician then replaced the vent solenoid located near the canister, yet the P0442 code persists. I believe a rotted filler neck would have been identified during the smoke test as well. Could this be an electrical fault? Or is it possible that there's a very minor leak not visible under standard testing procedures? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

No, P0442 is not a circuit-related code—it indicates the evaporative system is failing to maintain proper vacuum levels. To diagnose accurately, we need to verify that all components are functioning correctly. A dedicated OBD2 scanner is essential for this process. Check for vacuum pressure at the purge valve. Use the scanner to command both purge and vent solenoids and monitor FTP (Fuel Tank Pressure) readings during operation.
