1998 Mazda Mystique P0153 and P0305 Fault Codes: O2 Sensor Slow Response & Cylinder 5 Misfire

Model: mystique Fault Code: P0153 Posted: 2006-07-20 20:31

My 1998 Mazda V6 Mystique is showing two diagnostic trouble codes: P0153 (Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response - Bank 2, Sensor 1) and occasionally P0305 (Cylinder #5 Misfire). I believe these issues may be related, though I'm not certain. After some research, I've decided to replace the oxygen sensor. I have two questions: 1. Is Bank 2 referring to the rear bank of cylinders? I want confirmation on this to ensure I’m replacing the correct sensor. 2. I’ve heard that removing the O2 sensor is easier when the engine is hot, but working near a hot exhaust manifold feels risky. Does heat make removal easier, or does it not significantly affect the process? Thanks for any insight, Rich

Bank 2 is located on the side closest to the firewall. I recommend replacing the sensor when the engine and exhaust system are cool for safety. Additionally, if your vehicle has between 85,000 and 100,000 miles, a tune-up might be worthwhile—especially if one hasn't been performed previously.
