P0016 Fault Code in 2009 Ford Mustang 4.6L Engine: Diagnosis and Solutions
I've been experiencing a recurring P0016 diagnostic trouble code on my 2009 Ford Mustang with the 4.6L engine. The code appears randomly—sometimes after just 5 miles, other times after 50 miles—and I notice no noticeable performance changes whether or not the code is active. A few months ago, I installed a supercharger and received a new tune from a highly reputable tuner. Despite this, the issue persists. I've already inspected and cleaned all accessible ground connections and replaced both camshaft position sensors (located in the rocker cover). The tuner confirmed that the tuning should not trigger any check engine lights, though they were aware of aftermarket camshafts used during installation. After extensive troubleshooting, I'm still unable to resolve this issue and am seeking reliable advice from experienced users or mechanics.
Use your OBD2 scanner to monitor camshaft timing (offset and advance) — a discrepancy between expected and actual timing is the most likely cause. First, inspect the Variable Cam Timing (VCT) solenoids: ensure their electrical connectors are secure and free from corrosion. Remove and visually inspect the solenoid, as it may be faulty. The VCT solenoids are located under the valve cover. As a recommendation, replace them with genuine Ford parts — aftermarket options often have inconsistent quality. Oil condition, level, and pressure are critical for proper VCT operation. If the issue persists after this step, verify oil pressure using an oil pressure gauge and inspect the phasers or actuators directly.
