Mitsubishi Lancer 2003 P0172 Code After Swapping to 2006 Engine: Cause and Fix

Model: Mitsubishi Lancer Fault Code: P0172 Posted: 2010-08-07 11:30

Hi everyone, I recently swapped my 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer engine with a 2006 model. The new engine runs smoothly, but I'm consistently getting a P0172 code (Fuel Trim Bank 1 Too Rich). I've already replaced the air filter and cleared the code using a scan tool — however, it returns every time. The key difference between the two engines is that the 2003 model had a fuel return line, which is absent on the 2006 version. As a result, I capped the return line to maintain compatibility. Could this be causing the P0172 code? I'm looking for confirmation: does plugging or modifying a fuel return line affect fuel pressure and trigger rich fuel trim conditions? Any advice on whether using the original 2003 fuel rail would resolve the issue? Thanks in advance!

It's likely that the difference in operating pressure between the 2003 and 2006 engines plays a role. When a fuel system with a return line is blocked on the return side, fuel rail pressure increases, leading to higher injection pressures. This can cause the engine control unit (ECU) to interpret the mixture as too rich, triggering a P0172 code or shifting fuel trims toward richer settings. Using the original 2003 fuel rail instead of the 2006 one may resolve this issue and eliminate the DTC.

Thanks for the explanation! I'll try installing the original 2003 fuel rail to see if that clears up the P0172 code. Will update with results soon.
