Mercedes Benz ML350 P0016 and P0036 Error Codes: MIL Light On - How to Fix at Home?

Model: Mercedes Benz ML350 Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2014-03-02 11:05

I own a Mercedes-Benz ML350 and my check engine light (MIL) is on. A diagnostic scan revealed two error codes: 1. P0016 – The intake camshaft for the right cylinder bank is continuously adjusting in a 'retarded' direction. 2. P0036 – The right oxygen sensor (G3/6, located after the catalytic converter) has an open circuit due to heating issues. I'm looking for a clear, easy-to-understand explanation of what these errors mean and how they can be fixed without needing expensive repairs. Can someone explain in simple terms what's wrong and what steps I should take? Thanks in advance.

The P0016 code is related to the intake camshaft position, not a sensor. There are four magnetic adjusters on the front of the engine — these are NOT camshaft position sensors. If you're replacing parts based on incorrect information, it could lead to further issues. Make sure you're diagnosing correctly before replacing any components.

It's strongly recommended that you have your Mercedes-Benz ML350 diagnosed by an authorized MB-approved mechanic before attempting any repairs. The parts commonly referred to as 'camshaft position sensors' on this model are actually magnetic adjusters, and replacing them incorrectly can worsen the problem or cause additional damage.
