Mazda Protege 2001 ES Airbag Warning Light Flashes Code 2-6 - OBDII Not Involved

Model: Mazda Protege Fault Code: P2177 Posted: 2007-03-03 11:34

The dashboard airbag warning light on my 2001 Mazda Protege ES (85,000 miles) intermittently flashes the code '2-6'. This occurs only occasionally and typically appears at startup or after braking. The light may go off for months, especially after periods of acceleration, then reappear and flash continuously for weeks. It is important to note that this airbag-related code is not part of the OBDII system and does not indicate engine performance issues. Instead, it points to a potential problem within the airbag sensor or control module. A local dealer has suggested replacing the airbag module for hundreds of dollars. However, given that airbag systems are complex and potentially hazardous during servicing, any repair should only be performed by certified professionals with proper safety training. This issue is not related to OBDII diagnostics and cannot be resolved through standard diagnostic tools or DIY methods.

I have removed information from this post since it is not an OBDII issue. AIRBAG SERVICE SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL!!

Air bag repairs are not DIY projects or OBD2-related issues. They require specialized tools and safety procedures.

Jeff is correct — my mistake. Here's a follow-up: Airbag systems can be DANGEROUS and DEADLY if not serviced properly. If you are not familiar with the required safety procedures, DO NOT attempt any repairs under any circumstances. That said, Jeff is right that airbag codes are unrelated to OBDII and will not be covered in future posts. Thanks for correcting me — keep up the excellent work!
