P0021 Fault Code in 2002 Nissan Maxima SE - Diagnosis and Solutions

Hi all, I recently received a Check Engine Light (CEL) with code P0021 on my 2002 Nissan Maxima SE, which has approximately 50,000 miles. No noticeable symptoms have appeared yet—only the CEL came on four days ago. The dealership suggested an engine flush and oil change, stating that the camshaft position sensor is functioning properly and that the timing intake control solenoid may be clogged with debris. I'm not fully confident in this diagnosis, as I don't have enough technical knowledge to verify whether this explanation makes sense. I had a new crankshaft position sensor installed by the same dealer six months ago. Any insights or advice on how to properly address this P0021 code would be greatly appreciated! An oil change and inspection are reasonable first steps—especially checking oil condition, level, and pressure. I’d recommend asking the dealer about your current oil change schedule. Consider adding one quart of RISOLINE* engine treatment during your next oil change. This is a common solution for P0021 codes in vehicles with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) systems. *RISOLINE available at Walmart, AutoZone, and other auto parts stores.

Hi, thanks Kev2! I don’t drive the car very often, but I always follow a regular oil change schedule. Since I already had an engine flush and oil change performed by the dealer, when should I use RISOLINE? Should it be during my next oil change or more frequently? Also, if the P0020 code reappears, what would you recommend doing? Thank you for your help—I’ll keep you updated. P.S. I was hesitant because the dealer also recommended a brake fluid flush and replacement—despite having recently completed a full brake system service with new brakes and calipers and fresh brake fluid about six months ago!

Since you’ve already had the dealership’s recommended engine flush and oil change, RISOLINE is not necessary in this case. That product was only suggested as an optional add-on if you were performing the service yourself.
