P0021 Fault Code in 2002 Nissan Maxima SE - Diagnosis and Solutions
Hi all, I recently received a Check Engine Light (CEL) with code P0021 on my 2002 Nissan Maxima SE, which has approximately 50,000 miles. No noticeable symptoms have appeared yet—only the CEL came on four days ago. The dealership suggested an engine flush and oil change, stating that the camshaft position sensor is functioning properly and that the timing intake control solenoid may be clogged with debris. I'm not fully confident in this diagnosis, as I don't have enough technical knowledge to verify whether this explanation makes sense. I had a new crankshaft position sensor installed by the same dealer six months ago. Any insights or advice on how to properly address this P0021 code would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your help and guidance in advance.
An oil change and inspection are reasonable first steps—especially checking oil condition, level, and pressure. I’d recommend asking the dealer about your current oil change schedule. Consider adding one quart of RISOLINE* engine treatment during your next oil change. This is a common solution for P0021 codes in vehicles with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) systems. *RISOLINE available at Walmart, AutoZone, and other auto parts stores.
