2004 Lexus GS300 P0016 and C1201 Code: Causes, Fixes & Solutions

Model: Lexus GS300 Fault Code: C1201 Posted: 2019-04-08 10:57

Hello! I have a 2004 Lexus GS 300 with approximately 100,000 miles. About three weeks ago, after filling up with gas, I noticed the Check Engine and VSC lights came on. The car was running normally at the time—no unusual noises or performance issues. I first suspected a faulty gas cap, so I replaced it. After scanning the vehicle, I found code P0016: 'Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Correlation.' I replaced the crankshaft sensor yesterday and reset the system. However, within about 20 miles, both the Check Engine light and the ABS warning light came back on. The same P0016 code appears again, along with code C1201 (ABS Control Module). I'm looking for advice—what could be causing this? Are there any other components or systems I should check? Note: This issue is common in older 2004 Lexus GS300 models and may relate to timing chain wear, sensor misalignment, or mechanical faults in the engine's position sensing system.

If the timing belt hasn't been replaced yet, it's a critical step—timing issues can cause P0016 and C1201. Consider having the timing belt or chain inspected and replaced during this service. Possible causes include: - Timing chain stretched or timing belt skipped a tooth due to wear - Misalignment of the timing belt or chain - Crankshaft tone ring slipped or broken - Camshaft tone ring slipped or broken - Faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensors - Damaged wiring harnesses to the crank or cam sensors - Timing belt/chain tensioner failure Always inspect both sensors and their connections. A misalignment or worn component can cause a correlation error between the crank and cam positions, triggering P0016. C1201 may indicate an ABS module issue related to sensor input—check for wiring faults or ECU communication problems. Read more: P0016 code in Lexus GS300
