Kia Sedona 2.9 CRDI Engine Stuttering: MAF Code 0101 and 1140 Diagnosis & Fixes

Model: KIA Sedona 2.9 CRDI Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2012-12-23 03:43

I own a 2005 Kia Sedona with a 2.9L CRDI diesel engine, manually driven. The vehicle was purchased at 150,000 miles with an engine that had a cracked head. After replacing the engine at 90,000 miles (with new injectors and a fuel pump from my original engine), it has now reached 180,000 miles (30,000 since the engine swap). Over the past 1,000 miles, I've experienced intermittent driving issues. The car runs smoothly at idle but begins to stutter and judder when reaching operating temperature—indicating a potential air-fuel mixture problem. This only occurs while driving; idling remains unaffected. I had diagnostic codes read, which showed: - DTC 0400: EGR drive permanent low level (intermittent) - DTC 0101: Air mass flow (MAF) sensor signal — permanent low level (intermittent) - DTC 1140: Inlet air temperature sensor short circuit to ground (intermittent) - DTC 1120: Rail pressure control valve IMV parameter in upper limit (intermittent) - DTC 1500: Vehicle speed signal incoherent value (intermittent) The codes were cleared, and after a short drive, DTC 0101 reappeared. My mechanic suggested that the other codes may have been present for years—this aligns with my history of EGR removal during engine replacement and previous issues with the diesel fuel pump (resolved by reinstalling the original pump). He concluded that the issue is likely a faulty MAF sensor. I ordered a new MAF sensor, but while waiting, I installed a used one from a salvage yard. The problem persisted. I then had the vehicle scanned again at a certified Kia service center—DTC 0101 and 1140 returned (no additional details provided beyond code and part number). I've also replaced the throttle position sensor with a new unit, but symptoms remain unchanged. What should I check next? Are there any other components or wiring issues to investigate? Thanks, Ady
