2003 Jeep Liberty P0042 Code: O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 3 Heater Circuit Location and Fix Guide

Model: Jeep Liberty Fault Code: P0042 Posted: 2013-06-08 12:06

Hi, I own a 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport with a 3.7L V6 engine. The check engine light has come back on and stayed illuminated. I used an Actron CP9125 portable scanner to retrieve the fault code, which is P0042 — O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 3 Heater Circuit Malfunction. I'm looking for help identifying where this sensor is located on my vehicle and how to troubleshoot it. I've read that checking the fuse might be necessary. Could you please confirm whether the fuse is in the main fuse box or a separate location? Is there a specific fuse associated with this code? Any guidance on next steps would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I don't see P0042 for Bank 1 Sensor 3 — I only observe four O2 sensors. Let's try this: visit autozone or another dealership for a free diagnostic scan. This can provide a second opinion on the code. Please share any new codes you receive after their inspection.

Hi, I'm back with an update. I initially reported P0042 but upon re-scanning my 2003 Jeep Liberty, the actual code detected was P0442 — EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Small). I'd like to know where to start troubleshooting. Is it near the engine or in the exhaust system? Any specific areas to inspect?

P0442 — EVAP System Medium Leak. This is not an exhaust issue but rather a problem with the EVAP (Evaporative Emission) system, which manages fuel tank vapors and venting. Start by checking if the gas cap is tightly secured. Inspect the gasket for wear or damage. Next, check the PURGE valve located near the battery — ensure all connections are secure. Look for a yellow or green plastic service port; make sure it's tight. Also inspect vacuum hoses for any leaks. This should be your first set of steps. If no other codes appear after checking these items, I’ll follow up later.
