2008 Jeep Cherokee P0579: Cruise Control Switch Fault Diagnosis and Fixes

Model: Jeep Cherokee Fault Code: P0579 Posted: 2014-10-26 13:58

My 2008 Jeep Cherokee is showing a P0579 diagnostic trouble code, indicating the cruise control speed switch signal is stuck within a valid voltage range but not responding properly. The cruise light doesn't illuminate on the dashboard, and when I try to engage cruise control, it fails to set or stays off. Turning the ignition off and back on usually resolves the issue temporarily. However, this happens intermittently. I'm looking for help identifying whether this is a wiring, switch, or module fault. Any insights into common causes or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Could this be referring to a Grand Cherokee? The cruise control switch voltage output is within range but does not match any expected values for the button positions. Please confirm if all other systems are functioning normally—such as horn, brake lights, fuses, and any additional diagnostic codes. This issue requires thorough troubleshooting. I have some checks ready to perform. Note: Multiple fault codes related to S/C SWITCH NO.1 SIGNAL CIRCUIT appear including (V371) and (V71), indicating possible short to battery voltage or ground, as well as open circuits in the return path (V397, V937). Also present are faults showing signal circuit shorts to ground or to the switch return circuit. The affected component is the Speed Control Switch within the Steering Column Control Module and is monitored by the PCM.

Yes, this is a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with approximately 76,000 miles. All other vehicle functions work perfectly—no issues with lights, engine performance, or electronics. The only diagnostic code I'm seeing is P0579. Thanks for the help—I'm actively working through this issue and appreciate any further guidance on possible root causes or repair steps.
