P0700 Fault Code on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD - Engine Stays in First Gear or Reverse

Model: Jeep 2.7 CRD 2002 Fault Code: P0700 Posted: 2017-03-19 10:19

Last year I experienced electrical issues with my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7L CRD, which were resolved with the help of Kev2. Over the past three months, the vehicle has failed to start in the morning. After checking the fault codes using an ELM scanner, I found P0340, P0202, and P0700. The main wiring harness was inspected and revealed chaffed wires; these were repaired. Both injector No. 2 wires were replaced due to brittleness and shorting issues. After repairs, the vehicle starts but remains stuck in first gear or reverse. Additionally, the engine warning light activates immediately upon starting. The P0700 code persists even after clearing it via the scanner — it reappears as soon as the engine runs. I am seeking advice on how to resolve this transmission-related issue and get my vehicle back on the road. Any insights into potential causes or diagnostic steps would be greatly appreciated.

This is a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 2.7L CRD engine, correct? P0700 is a generic transmission fault code — it often indicates deeper transmission issues. Are you using an OBD2 scanner or relying on the 'key dance' method to retrieve codes? Note: Key dance does not reliably detect all faults. It's Sunday, so I might need to wait until Monday to access a CRD wiring diagram. Given your history of electrical problems, check the fuses and consider scanning with proper equipment.

Thanks for the response, Kev2. Yes, it's a Grand Cherokee equipped with the 2.7L Mercedes-derived engine. I'm using an ELM scanner that only displays fault codes and allows code clearing — it does not show underlying sub-faults. After clearing P0700, the engine starts, but the check engine light immediately comes back on with the same P0700 code.

Confirmed — this is a Grand Cherokee (export model designated as WG). The gear shift assembly should be your first point of inspection. If you find any codes, please share them. Here's a helpful video reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cybbeQ1-AZU. GTG.

Thanks, Kev2. I’ve already disassembled the gear shift mechanism this Sunday and will inspect the shift linkage and control board later this week when I have time available.

I recommend starting with reading the trouble codes stored in the Transmission Control Module (TCM) — these may provide more specific insights than the generic P0700 code.
