Honda 2001 Prelude P0715 and P0700 Codes: Fix or Replace Transmission?

Model: Honda 2001 Prelude Fault Code: P0700 Posted: 2015-01-02 16:54

I'm experiencing both P0715 and P0700 diagnostic trouble codes on my 2001 Honda Prelude. I took it to a mechanic who replaced the transmission speed sensor, and after the work, the check engine light turned off. However, once I started driving it, both codes returned. The mechanic advised me not to spend more money and suggested buying a new transmission. I'm confused—since both P0715 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Malfunction) and P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) are present, did he perform the repair incorrectly? Or is a full transmission replacement truly necessary? I'm a female owner and would appreciate clear technical insights from experienced users or mechanics.

P0715 indicates a malfunction in the Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A circuit. This is often related to sensor wiring, connection issues, or faulty sensors—replacing it may resolve the issue, but only after proper diagnosis.

I had a similar situation where a mechanic replaced the input speed sensor. The check engine light went off initially, but returned shortly after driving. Since then, my D4 light has been flashing—could this point to a solenoid issue or a deeper transmission control problem?

My 2001 Prelude has three speed sensors in the transmission. It's possible that the two sensors replaced were not the correct ones for the P0715 and P0700 issues—misidentification could lead to recurring codes.

I took my car to a first mechanic who replaced one transmission speed sensor. The check engine light went off, but returned after driving. I then had another technician replace a different sensor (one of three on the transmission), and again, the light turned off temporarily before returning. This suggests either incorrect sensor replacement or an underlying wiring or control module issue—could they be replacing the wrong sensors?

Same as above: P0715 and P0700 codes persist after sensor replacement. The check engine light turns off temporarily but returns after driving. This raises concerns about whether the wrong sensors were replaced or if deeper transmission system issues exist—such as wiring faults or solenoid problems.

It sounds like the mechanic is replacing parts without proper troubleshooting. A full diagnostic check of wiring, sensor connections, and control module signals should be performed before any repair or replacement decision.

I recommend taking it to a second opinion from a reputable shop with experience in Honda Prelude transmission diagnostics—many P0715/P0700 issues stem from wiring or sensor misalignment, not full transmission failure.
