2008 Volkswagen Golf City P0139 Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response Diagnosis and Fix

Model: Golf Fault Code: P0139 Posted: 2015-04-28 21:27

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with my 2008 Volkswagen Golf City and have recently picked up the OBD2 fault code P0139: 'Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1, Sensor 2)'. I've tried erasing the code once, but it returns consistently. I visited a garage where they charged me $100 for diagnostics and suggested that the issue might be a loose oxygen sensor connection — they only tightened it instead of replacing the sensor. After this repair, the check engine light came back on again. I haven't noticed any changes in my driving behavior or vehicle performance. My main question is: Is this code a serious problem? Does it indicate that the oxygen sensor itself needs replacement rather than just being loose? I'm not very experienced with car mechanics, so any advice or technical insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help! Additional reference: https://www.obd-codes.com/p013-9

An oxygen sensor issue can be significant — it affects fuel efficiency and emissions. For P0139 specifically, a slow response in the oxygen sensor circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 2) often points to either a faulty sensor or poor electrical connection. While tightening the sensor may resolve temporary issues, repeated code returns suggest a deeper problem. It's recommended to replace the sensor if it's worn out or damaged, especially since this code can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced engine performance over time.
