2014 GMC Vandura P0116 DTC: PCM Not Configured for Block Heater - Can It Be Programmed or Does It Need Replacement?

Model: GMC Fault Code: P0116 Posted: 2015-01-26 13:14

I own a 2014 GMC Vandura and recently received a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0116 from my dealership. They informed me that the vehicle's Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is not configured for a block heater, which is causing this code to appear. While I can clear the code manually, it returns every week, making it inconvenient and frustrating. My question: Can the PCM be reprogrammed to support a block heater, or do I need to replace the entire PCM module? I'm looking for clarity on whether there's a software update or factory procedure available to resolve this without hardware replacement.

Your dealer should verify the applicable Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) — specifically TSB #10-06-04-008B. According to that bulletin, this condition may occur when the PCM determines that ignition-off time has been met during startup and interprets the temperature difference between the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor as being outside of a calibrated range. The TSB recommends relocating the ECT sensor in certain cases. However, this is not always applicable to all 2014 GMC Vandura models with block heater setups. Please update us on your outcome — does reprogramming resolve the issue or was hardware replacement necessary?
