P0351 Code on GMC Sierra: Diagnosis and Fix for Engine Stumble at Startup

Model: GMC Sierra Fault Code: P0351 Posted: 2020-05-23 08:33

Vehicle starts and runs normally, but a P0351 fault code returns after clearing. The engine stumbles only during the first start sequence. This indicates a potential issue with ignition system components or control signals from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Despite normal operation under load, the recurring check engine light and initial stumble suggest intermittent faults in the coil-on-plug (COP) ignition circuit.

Common causes of P0351 include: - Short to voltage or ground on COP driver circuit - Open circuit in COP driver wiring - Loose connection at the coil or damaged connector locks - Faulty coil-on-plug (COP) - Defective Powertrain Control Module (PCM) For detailed troubleshooting, refer to official technical resources: P0351 code explanation and diagnostic procedures.

The issue may be related to a single coil failure. Check the ICM's power, ground, and control circuit connections. A defective ICM is possible—circuit testing can confirm this. Perform diagnostics while the fault is active for accurate results.

No extended crank cycle detected? Possible causes include a faulty ICM connector or ignition timing wire between ICM and PCM. Verify power and ground supply to the module, as well as internal functionality. The fault is a two-trip condition: when the PCM sends a 0–5V digital signal to the ICM, values below 0.04V or above 4.9V trigger P0351. ICM part number: 10482803. Consider replacing the ICM with an OEM unit for reliable performance.
