2013 GMC Acadia P0742 Fault Code: Transmission Stalling and Shuddering at Stop - Fluid Change or Full Replacement?

Model: GMC Acadia Fault Code: P0742 Posted: 2019-09-04 09:16

My 2013 GMC Acadia stalls when coming to a complete stop and experiences shuddering during gear shifts from 2nd (low) gear. The transmission fluid is dirty, and the mechanic has found metal particles in it. I'm wondering whether this issue requires a full transmission replacement or if a simple fluid change might resolve it. Given that a complete transmission overhaul is costly, I'm hoping for a more affordable solution before committing to major repairs.

The P0742 diagnostic code can be caused by issues such as a damaged or pinched wiring harness connected to the transmission, failure of the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid, or faults in the Transmission Control Module (TCM). A fluid change may help if contamination is the primary issue, but underlying electronic or mechanical failures may require further diagnosis. Always verify with a scan tool and check for additional fault codes before proceeding. Read more: P0742 - GMC Acadia Transmission Fault Code

Thank you! I read the article on P0742 before posting — it was very helpful, though I still wasn't certain what steps to take. The shop is recommending a full transmission replacement, which feels expensive and overkill for this issue. I plan to start with a fluid flush and filter change, then have them inspect and repair any faulty solenoid or wiring connections. If the problem persists after that, I’ll consider a more extensive repair. Thanks again for the insight!
