P0251A and P1216 Codes on 1998 GMC 6.5L Diesel Engine: Causes and Fixes

Model: GMC 6.5L diesel Fault Code: P1216 Posted: 2007-03-03 15:15

I'm working on a 1998 GMC G-Series van equipped with the 6.5L diesel engine, which has triggered both P025-than and P1216 diagnostic codes. After clearing the codes, they return immediately upon engine cranking, and the vehicle often struggles to start. I'm looking for reliable information on what might be causing these issues. Could the fuel solenoid driver or the injection pump itself be faulty? The P1216 code specifically relates to the fuel solenoid driver indicating a delay in closing the control valve. Are these two codes commonly linked—perhaps pointing to a failing fuel solenoid driver? Any insights into diagnosis, repair steps, or component replacements would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

If air enters the fuel system when the tank drops below 1/8 full or during fuel depletion, both P0251A and P1216 codes can be triggered. The P0251A code suggests that the optical sensor monitoring the injection pump camshaft missed a count—check the 5-volt reference wire to this sensor for shorts to ground or insufficient voltage. A faulty sensor or worn injection pump may be involved. For P1216, the issue arises when the fuel solenoid control valve takes too long to close. This could indicate a failing solenoid driver. Air in the system is often the root cause—bleeding the fuel lines and ensuring proper priming may resolve both issues. I hope this helps; please update with your results. Good night from California, Andy.
