2003 Ford Ranger P0446 Code: EVAP Vent Circuit Malfunction Diagnosis and Fix

Model: Ford Ranger Fault Code: P0446 Posted: 2007-03-04 14:08

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger with the check engine light on. After scanning for trouble codes, I found the following diagnostic code: P0446 - Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Circuit Malfunction This code indicates an issue with the Canister Vent (CV) solenoid circuit in the EVAP system. The CV solenoid normally vents to atmosphere and closes during EVAP system testing to create a vacuum for leak detection. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is responsible for controlling this solenoid, but it's failing to operate correctly on my truck. Below are steps I’ve found helpful in diagnosing and fixing the issue: 1. Check fuse 20A (F1.41) located in the battery junction box under the hood — it’s situated near the windshield washer relay. - This is a quick test; if the fuse is blown, it could be the root cause. 2. Locate the CV solenoid: It's typically found near the rear left corner of the truck bed, close to the EVAP canister. 3. Inspect the solenoid connector: - With the key on, check for 12V power on one terminal (always hot). - The other wire should receive a ground signal when the PCM commands it to close the vent. 4. Test resistance at the solenoid terminals — values between 48 and 65 ohms are normal. - If resistance is outside this range, replace the solenoid. 5. Perform a bench test: Disconnect the solenoid and apply 12V directly to it. Listen for a click and check if air flows through one of the nipples — if no sound or airflow occurs, the solenoid is faulty. If the solenoid passes testing but the system still fails, there may be an open circuit in wiring or connectors between the PCM and the solenoid. I’m looking for confirmation on this diagnosis and any additional tips from experienced users. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ahhh, EVAP system — I recently studied it in detail. This P0446 code specifically refers to the Canister Vent (CV) solenoid circuit. Normally, the vent is open to atmosphere and closes (with the solenoid energized) during an EVAP system test to seal the system and build vacuum for leak detection. Some manufacturers, like Chrysler, use pressure instead of vacuum. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the CV solenoid — but in your 2003 Ford Ranger, it's not functioning properly. Possible causes include: - A blown fuse: Check fuse 20A (F1-41) in the battery junction box under the hood — located near the windshield washer relay. - This is a simple and quick test; even if no other codes are present, it's worth checking. - Wiring or connector issues: The CV solenoid has two wires: - One provides constant power (hot) when the key is on. - The second wire grounds only when the PCM commands the vent to close. To test: 1. With the key on, check for 12V at the solenoid connector. 2. Measure resistance between terminals — it should be between 48 and 65 ohms. 3. If out of range, replace the solenoid. For a bench test: Disconnect the solenoid, apply 12V directly to it, and listen for a click. Then blow through one of the nipples — if there's no sound or airflow, the solenoid is defective. Location: The CV solenoid is typically found under the truck, near the rear left corner of the bed, close to the EVAP canister. This should help narrow down the issue. Good luck with your repair! — Andy
