Ford F150 Code P1451: How to Fix Evap System Fault After Replacing Gas Cap and Solenoid

Model: Ford F150 Fault Code: P1451 Posted: 2006-10-14 14:17

I recently received a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1451 on my Ford F150, which relates to the evaporative emission control system. I've already replaced the gas cap and the canister solenoid, but the code persists. I've also thoroughly inspected all hoses for leaks and found none. What other components could be causing this issue? Any guidance on further diagnostics would be greatly appreciated.

Ensure that the Canister Vent (CV) solenoid is receiving at least 10.5 volts of power. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the CV solenoid; it should fall between 48 and 65 ohms. If the readings are outside this range, replace the solenoid. Additionally, inspect the solenoid for physical damage or corrosion.

I replaced both the canister solenoid with a genuine Ford part and also checked and replaced several valves on top of the fuel tank. The issue was resolved after these changes, so I'm glad to see this solution works for others.

I had my vehicle professionally smoke tested — it helped identify a hidden leak in the evaporative system that wasn't visible during visual inspection.
