2000 Ford F-15-0 P1309 Code Not Clearing After Cam Position Sensor Sync Fix

Model: Ford F-150 Fault Code: P1309 Posted: 2008-03-08 22:06

I own a 2000 Ford F-150 with a 4.2L V6 engine, currently at around 106,000 miles. After a recent engine rebuild, the vehicle began throwing fault code P1309. I investigated this using online resources and discovered that the cam positioning sensor should be checked for proper synchronization. I purchased a sync tool and confirmed the sensor was out of phase. Once synchronized, the truck idles more smoothly, has improved responsiveness, and fuel efficiency increased from 14 to 16.5 MPG. However, the P1309 code persists. What other potential causes could be responsible for this ongoing issue? Are there specific diagnostic steps I should follow beyond sensor synchronization?

Based on my research, I checked the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor first — it appears functional. Next, I looked into the coolant temperature sensor. My Chilton manual indicates there are two sensors: one for the temperature gauge and another for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). I found the physical location of the gauge-side sensor but discovered no actual sensor present—only a plug. Since my temperature gauge operates normally, I suspect the PCM-side sensor is missing or disconnected. I also tested the crankshaft position sensor; according to Chilton, with the ignition on, the sensor plug should read battery voltage (around 12V). My reading was only 1.52 volts, which suggests a potential fault. How can I properly test the PCM itself? Are there known common failure points for this code in 2000 F-150s?
