OBD Code P0161 in 1996 Ford Explorer V8 AWD - Sensor Replacement Failed After 20 Miles
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer V8 AWD with approximately 200,000 miles. The vehicle is showing OBD code P0161, indicating a fault in the oxygen sensor bank 2, sensor 2. I replaced the oxygen sensor and cleared the DTC from the ECU. After driving about 20 miles, the check engine light reappeared with the same code P0161. I checked the wiring harness at the connector for power to the heater circuit in the oxygen sensor—everything appears normal. However, the check engine light remains on. I'm unable to determine why the fault is recurring. Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the questions—but do you have access to an OBD2 scanner with live data? Are there any other diagnostic codes present? Which side of the engine is bank 2 located on? Did you install a low-quality or aftermarket oxygen sensor? If yes, we’ll need to verify the wiring and ohm rating of the sensor. Also, ensure that only two wires are receiving 12V—any more than that could indicate a wiring issue.
