P0125 Fault on 2000 Ford Escort Zx2: Engine Won't Turn Over Despite No Overheating or Leaks

Model: ford escort Fault Code: P0125 Posted: 2007-01-22 15:48

I own a 2000 Ford Escort Zx2 and recently encountered a check engine light that triggered a P0125 diagnostic code. While driving home, the S.E.S. illuminated, and after visiting an auto shop, I was told the issue is related to the thermostat or possibly a faulty engine temperature sensor. I attempted to replace the thermostat today, but now my engine will not turn over at all. It has never overheated, and I've inspected for any coolant leaks—none are visible. This raises my concern: could an open valve (such as in the thermostat) cause the engine to fail to start? I’ve never heard of this scenario before, so I’m wondering if there’s another underlying issue I’m overlooking. My main question is whether a malfunctioning thermostat or open valve can prevent the engine from turning over. If not, what other potential causes should I investigate?

When attempting to turn the ignition, it sounds almost like there's a clogged fuel filter—this might be helpful for others experiencing similar issues.

Has coolant mixed with engine oil? This could indicate hydrolock. Will the engine turn over when you apply boost? Do the headlights dim during cranking? Can you hear the starter clicking? While a P0125 code is concerning, it's likely not the primary issue here. I strongly recommend getting your vehicle towed to a professional mechanic for diagnosis—safety and proper repair should be prioritized.
