P0171 on '99 Ford Escort ZX2

Model: Ford Escort ZX2 Fault Code: P0171 Posted: 2006-03-28 08:56

By doing research I found out that it could possible be two things. 1.) MAF Sensor is dirty or not working. 2.) Vacuum leak downstream of the MAF Sensor. My question is, is this a do it yourself project? I'm not a car guru, but I can do regular maintenance. Where is the sensor located and how do I change it? Thanks!

Check the pcv valve and the hoses going to it, pretty common for the hose to split and cause a vacuum leak, if the hose and valve are good, then possible the MAF heating elements need to be cleanned or there's a leak in the air intake snorkel. Check fuel pressure to be sure it's within spec Good luck and keep us postted Jeff

I didn't feel confident about doing the work myself, so I'm having my mechanic friend look at tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Hmmm, I have the same make and model with the same code. Please post what your mechanic friend told you. I plan to replaced the hose from the air filter to the PCV valve anyway (Somewhat cracked up) Thanks.

Got it fixed, It was a vacuum leak. My mechanic said that he had to replace 3 manifold gaskets. Car runs good now.
