P0430 OBD2 Fault Code in 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX - Need Advice on PCM Reprogramming or Catalytic Converter Replacement
I own a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX. Last year, I replaced the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) after the vehicle began running roughly and exhibiting erratic engine behavior. After the replacement, the check engine light activated, and the car failed an emission test with the OBD2 system showing 'NOT READY'. Subsequently, a P0430 fault code appeared — indicating a catalytic converter issue — even after I replaced the exhaust valves. The problem persists despite multiple visits to different mechanics, many of whom recommended expensive repairs without clear diagnosis. My question is: Do I need to reprogram the newly installed PCM, even though the engine runs smoothly under normal conditions? Or would replacing the catalytic converter be a more effective and cost-efficient solution? Thank you for your guidance on this matter.
Replacing a PCM is uncommon and typically only done when the issue cannot be diagnosed otherwise. Can you explain why you chose to replace the PCM? Do you have access to an OBD2 scanner? Currently, your primary concern appears to be P0430. For reference: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0430. Are there any other symptoms or error codes present at this time?
