F350 P0101 and P0104 Codes After MAF Sensor Replacement - Causes and Solutions

Model: F350 Fault Code: P0101 Posted: 2016-09-02 18:56

I'm experiencing pinging under light to heavy load conditions. I suspected a faulty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor, so I replaced the existing one. The old sensor had an electrode that was loose or not properly seated—this is what I meant by 'electrode handing free.' After installing the new MAF sensor, the vehicle triggered both P0101 (Malfunctioning MAF Sensor - Low Signal) and P0104 (MAF Sensor Circuit Malfunction). I cleared the codes and drove for 10 miles before they returned. The issue persists. I'm wondering if the new MAF sensor is defective or if there's another underlying cause. Could it be a wiring issue, connector failure, or a problem with the sensor itself? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

The phrase 'electrode handing free' is unclear—could you clarify what this means? Did you have any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before replacing the MAF sensor? It's worth checking the MAF connector and wiring, as faults often occur in the first few inches near the connection point.

When inspecting the MAF sensor, I noticed two electrodes: a small one and a larger one. The larger electrode appeared to have a manufacturing defect—both connections were on one side of the post, but only one was connected on the other. This irregularity was visible after I cleaned the sensor due to pinging issues. After replacing it with a new MAF, the vehicle ran fine for about 10 miles before throwing P0101 and P0104. When I reinstalled the original sensor, no codes appeared and the issue disappeared. Could the new MAF sensor be defective?

The original MAF sensor is currently back in the vehicle. Are there any current diagnostic codes or ongoing symptoms? The MAF sensor I purchased was a Ford OEM part (AIP) matching the factory number—but it seems to be defective. Could this be a sign of quality issues with aftermarket or even new OEM sensors?

The original sensor is back in the vehicle and has not triggered any codes. The pinging issue remains mild but noticeable.

Are there any other diagnostic trouble codes besides P0101 and P0104? Is the truck stock with no aftermarket modifications? If you have a scan tool, check values for ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature), manifold pressure (MAP), oxygen sensors pre-cat (bank 1 & 2), and fuel trim. Without a scanner, consider checking fuel pressure and performing a vacuum leak test.

The truck is bone stock with no aftermarket parts or modifications. No other codes are present. Thanks for the advice!
