P0453 DTC Fix for 2006 Ford F150 - Engine Runs Rough at Idle

Model: F150 Fault Code: P2000 Posted: 2018-10-06 14:38

I recently resolved the P0453 code by tightening a loose connector, and all trouble codes have since disappeared. However, during a short drive, the truck began exhibiting rough running behavior when coming to a stop or slowing down below 40 km/h. The issue does not occur when revving the engine—once I accelerate, the idle smooths out. This intermittent problem is concerning, as it affects drivability at low speeds. What could be causing this? Is it related to fuel trim inconsistencies or another underlying system fault?

Could you share your fuel trims at idle versus higher RPMs? Also, what specific engine configuration do you have?

I'm unable to provide fuel trim data. My truck is equipped with a 5.4L 3V V8 engine.

Begin by cleaning the MAF sensor and checking for vacuum leaks. If those are ruled out, further diagnosis of engine parameters such as fuel trims and intake air pressure may be necessary.

Could it be related to the VCT solenoids?

If the VCT solenoids were stuck, you would typically see corresponding error codes. However, you can test this by disconnecting the solenoids while the engine is off, then starting the engine and observing whether the rough idle improves at low RPMs.
