1997 Ford F150 P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Code and I/M Readiness Issues

Model: F150 Fault Code: P0340 Posted: 2010-05-17 13:55

We recently purchased a 1997 Ford F150 and are encountering difficulties during the vehicle inspection process. A code reader has identified a camshaft position sensor fault (P0340). Additionally, the vehicle shows four I/M readiness status failures: oxygen sensor, oxygen heater sensor, catalytic converter, and EVAP system. We attempted the recommended method—driving at 60 mph and coasting down to 40 mph three times—to reset the oxygen sensors, but this did not resolve the issue. The question remains: is the P0340 code directly causing the other systems to remain 'not ready'? Should we simply replace the oxygen sensor, or are there specific driving conditions required to achieve I/M readiness? We're seeking clarity on whether fixing the camshaft position sensor will enable the vehicle's PCM to complete all emissions-related tests.

Yes, you must first address and repair the camshaft position (CMP) sensor issue. Once the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives accurate signals from the sensor, it will be able to perform the other emissions tests. Additionally, ensure that the synchro drive unit's vane is intact and not bent; a damaged vane could contribute to the problem. If the issue persists, inspect both the CMP sensor itself and its wiring connections for faults.

Thank you! We've cleared the P0340 code and are now working on achieving I/M readiness status. The next step is to ensure all systems pass their respective tests after addressing the sensor issue.
