P0441 Fault Code on 1996 Dodge Ram 1500: Causes and Fixes

Model: dodge ram 1500 Fault Code: P0441 Posted: 2008-10-25 13:49

I own a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD with a 318 engine. I'm currently experiencing a P0441 diagnostic trouble code, indicating an issue with the evaporative emission control system. I've already replaced the purge solenoid, cracked hoses, and connectors. I've also blown out the lines and found small black pellets coming out—this suggests possible degradation in the system. I’ve replaced the gas cap as well. My question is: does the charcoal canister need to contain active charcoal pellets to function properly? If the canister has lost its charcoal or is damaged, will the purge system still register a P0441 fault? Thanks for any insight. Steve

If black pellets are found in the hoses during line blowing, it indicates that the charcoal canister has likely ruptured or failed. You should replace the entire charcoal canister and ensure all associated lines are thoroughly cleaned. Additionally, verify that the purge valve is installed correctly—look for a label indicating 'UP' or 'TOP' on the valve body to confirm proper orientation.

The presence of black pellets in the system often points to a failed leak detection pump assembly. These particles are typically fragments from deteriorated charcoal within the canister, likely caused by overfilling the fuel tank. This suggests that the root cause may be related to improper fuel fill practices or an aging canister with compromised integrity.
