Dodge Dakota P0733 Fault: High RPM at 50-60 mph, Dirty Fluid, 42RLE Transmission Issues

Model: Dodge Dakota Fault Code: P0733 Posted: 2019-03-02 11:04

Good morning, I recently purchased a 201X Dodge Dakota with a V6 engine. The truck began exhibiting transmission issues—jerking during shifts into second and third gear. Eventually, it would get stuck in third gear at around 50-60 mph, with the RPMs consistently staying high (around 4000 rpm). I flushed the transmission fluid, which was previously very dirty and contained fine metallic particles. After flushing, the fluid appeared clean. Despite this, the check engine light triggered a P073-3 code. I replaced the input speed sensor, but the symptoms persist. The truck is equipped with an automatic transmission (42RLE). The issue appears to be ongoing even when shifting manually—still stuck in third gear. Could this be due to internal transmission failure? What are the most likely causes of P0733 in a Dodge Dakota 42RLE? Thanks for any guidance.

If the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and shift solenoids are functioning properly, an internal transmission failure is likely. A professional transmission shop diagnosis is strongly recommended. Possible causes of P0733 in this vehicle include: - Low or dirty transmission fluid - Mechanical damage inside the transmission - Internal blockage in the main control valve - Faulty shift solenoid - Malfunctioning Transmission Control Module (TCM) For more detailed information, refer to official diagnostic resources: P0733 code explanation.

Thanks, cj1. I'll need to take it to a specialized transmission shop for proper diagnosis and repair.
