2007 Dodge Caliber P0017 Fault: Rough Idle, Stalling, and TSB 18-018-0-7A Details

Model: Dodge Caliber Fault Code: P0017 Posted: 2014-05-18 13:32

I own a 2007 Dodge Caliber that has been storing only the P0017 diagnostic trouble code. The vehicle exhibits rough idle and intermittent stalling, though it runs fine at times. The issue appears to worsen after extended driving periods. I'm concerned about whether this is related to known engine issues or a specific technical service bulletin (TSB).

This is a known issue documented in TSB 18-018-07A. Your local Dodge dealer can provide the full details of this technical service bulletin. Please note: A TSB is not a recall and does not automatically qualify for free repairs or parts.

What exactly does the TSB address? Can a local auto shop perform the required work?

It is NOT a recall. A qualified repair shop could access the TSB information, but would need the capability to reflash the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Parts must be sourced from an authorized Dodge dealer. Depending on engine type, camshaft position sensors and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) data should be checked. Have you recently had any repairs or maintenance performed? Vehicle history may help — this issue has only started appearing after 7 years of use, which raises questions about whether other factors could contribute.

The engine was replaced at the Dodge dealership when the vehicle reached 100,000 miles. The current mileage is 180,000 miles. The most recent maintenance included a thermostat replacement and routine service.

Was the correct thermostat used? Was it rated at a lower temperature than recommended? What constitutes a 'regular service'? Is it just oil and filter changes? What type of motor oil was used — especially its viscosity (weight)? A newer engine may be more susceptible to this TSB-related issue. Did any work performed prior to the P0017 code appear, such as the thermostat replacement or service, occur within a day or two before the problem started?
