1996 Chrysler Stratus V6 Transmission Not Shifting: OBD2 Shows 'TCM NOT EQUIPPED' and PRND3L Malfunction

Model: CHRYSLER STRATUS Fault Code: P0050 Posted: 2016-12-03 12:36

My 1996 Chrysler Stratus with a 2.5L V6 engine is experiencing intermittent transmission shifting issues. When driving and I slow down, the vehicle fails to shift properly. However, after stopping the car, turning off the engine, and restarting it, the transmission shifts normally. I used an OBD2 scanner and received the fault code: 'TCM NOT EQUIPPED'. Key Observations: 1. The PRND3L gauge malfunctions during the shifting issue — when I shift into Park (P), the display shows 'L' and '3' when in Neutral (N) until the vehicle is turned off and restarted. 2. Even when placed in Park, the PRND3L dashboard displays 'N' instead of 'P'. This behavior occurs intermittently and I'm unsure whether this is a software issue, wiring problem, or a hardware failure related to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). I need help interpreting these symptoms and identifying potential causes. Any insights on how to diagnose or resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Please specify your model year, body style (2-door, 4-door, convertible), and engine type. Try using a different OBD2 scanner — many auto parts stores offer free scans. Copy and paste all diagnostic codes you receive. Have there been any recent modifications? Is the vehicle stock or has it had a remote starter installed?

Thanks for your response. Model: 1996 Chrysler Stratus LX, 2.5L V6. The scanner detected the PCM but reported 'TCM NOT EQUIPPED'. I would like to receive the wiring diagram for this vehicle so I can take it to a rewire specialist. Email: phemobay85@gmail.com Thank you.

I'm still unsure about the body style and location. The 'Chrysler' Stratus was not widely sold in the U.S. — the 2.5L engine suggests a Mitsubishi platform, and convertibles were uncommon for Chrysler models. This may indicate a shared platform with Mitsubishi.
