P0455 Fault and Difficulty Refueling on 2004 Chevy Tahoe - Gas Cap Replacement Issue

I recently encountered a P0455 diagnostic trouble code on my 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe. The check engine light activated during a hunting trip, and I realized the gas cap had not been replaced—its tether had broken. After purchasing and installing a new gas cap, the warning light remained illuminated. Additionally, I've noticed it has become increasingly difficult to refill the tank. At the service station, the fuel pump repeatedly clicks off during filling. I have attempted multiple resets of the code, but it consistently returns. Could the issue be related to the old gas cap allowing air leaks or contamination? I also drove on dirt roads prior to discovering the missing cap—could dust accumulation in the fuel tank contribute to triggering the P0455 code and affect refueling performance?
