P0016 Fault Code on 2007 Chevrolet Suburban: Camshaft Position Sensor and VVT Issues

Model: chevy suburban Fault Code: P0016 Posted: 2021-02-25 17:35

Last year, we replaced the camshaft position sensor on our 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, but the check engine light remained on with a persistent P0016 code. Initially, it was flagged as a correlation issue, but since the code has not cleared and continues to appear — now indicating 'crankshaft position: camshaft sensor intake not plausible' — we have taken several steps. We first replaced the crankshaft position sensor and associated wiring. Despite this, the P0016 error persists. Given that the vehicle had gone beyond its normal oil change interval, we also replaced the VVT solenoid and actuator with no improvement. At this point, we are unable to identify the root cause or determine the next steps. Any insights or diagnostic advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you replaced both the VVT solenoid and actuator? If so, can you access a scan tool that reads actual VVT position and variance? A stuck or malfunctioning actuator is a common cause of P0016. However, if the VVT system appears to be functioning correctly, a timing chain issue should be considered. I recommend verifying actuator movement using an oscilloscope, comparing camshaft and crankshaft sensor signals against known good readings. In some cases, blocked passages or oil contamination can prevent proper actuation — try performing a full oil flush. A scope is essential to detect any timing misalignment. Also, check for engine noise and assess how the truck runs under load. Is it only showing P0016? If so, consider scheduling an ASE-certified diagnostic session, as this may require specialized equipment and time.
