P0010 Fault in 2008 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.9L - Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit Open Bank 1

Model: Chevy Impala 2008 LTZ 3.9 Fault Code: P0010 Posted: 2019-12-09 12:50

I'm experiencing a recurring P0010 fault on my 2008 Chevrolet Impala LTZ with the 3.9L engine: 'Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit Open - Bank 1 (Current and Pending).' I have already replaced the camshaft position actuator/solenoid, repaired the wire harness, and cleared the code. However, after completing a drive cycle, the P0010 code returns. Could this be due to a faulty oil control valve (OCV), an open or short in the VVT/VCT circuit, a damaged OCV solenoid, or a malfunctioning powertrain control module (PCM)? Any insights or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Note: This refers to the camshaft actuator or control unit, not just the sensor. A P0010 code can indicate one or more of the following issues: a faulty oil control valve (OCV), an open or short in the VVT/VCT circuit, an open/short in the OCV solenoid valve, or a damaged powertrain control module (PCM). For more details, refer to official diagnostic resources on P0010.

I replaced the VVT actuator in August, and after that, the code cleared. However, I was advised it could be related to a faulty timing chain or pulley, as well as potential issues with the same component. The wiring connection was also suspected as a possible root cause.

To verify, you can perform a back-probe test on the VVT solenoid to check for voltage input from the PCM as engine RPM increases. This helps confirm whether the actuator is receiving proper signals and can pinpoint if the issue lies in the wiring or the control unit itself.
