Dodge Ram 2003 1500 Quad Cab 4.7L V8 - P0344 Misfire at High RPM: Causes and Fixes

Model: Chamshaft Fault Code: P0344 Posted: 2007-10-02 11:35

Hi! I own a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 with a 4.7L V8 engine, currently at 71,000 miles. Recently, the vehicle started misfiring specifically above 3500 RPM, and the OBD2 fault code P0344 appeared. I'm wondering if this is normal behavior or if it's indicative of a serious issue. Could anyone provide advice on how to diagnose and fix this? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, gpele

The camshaft position sensor (P0344) is known to fail relatively frequently on the 4.7L V8 engine in Dodge Rams, especially after high-mileage use. It's less common on Magnum-series engines—so I wanted to confirm which engine variant you have. Beyond electrical faults, a timing chain issue could also trigger this code. If the sensor is faulty or the timing chain has slipped, it can cause misfires at higher RPMs and should be inspected promptly.
