2013-2015 Ford Focus 3.2L Alloytec Engine P0018 Fault: Cam Phaser or Chain Tensioner Issue?
Hi everyone, I'm currently troubleshooting a persistent P0018 fault on my 2013-2015 Ford Focus 3.2L Alloytec engine (auto transmission). The diagnostic code P0018 indicates an 'Incorrect Camshaft Position' in Bank 2 Intake, with correlation between the crankshaft and camshaft signals. I installed chain guides and tensioners approximately six months ago to address potential timing chain issues. The vehicle has also received a software update since then. After thorough inspection, I've confirmed that the timing chains show minimal variance on lab scope overlays when blipping the throttle — indicating good chain alignment and movement. I have swapped both camshaft position sensors and solenoids between front and rear banks, but the P0018 code persists without any change in behavior. The fault is intermittent: it may appear within minutes or take up to an hour to manifest. When it does occur, it typically happens during acceleration from a stop. Given that all mechanical components have been checked and no sensor issues are evident, I suspect the root cause lies with the cam phaser (or cam sprocket) assembly. Has anyone else experienced this exact P0018 issue on their 3.2L Alloytec engine? Any known fixes or diagnostic tips? Thanks, Jim
