Recently, I've received a P0420 diagnostic trouble code indicating a catalytic converter issue. The car doesn't show any power loss or performance problems, but I'm concerned about the cost of repairs. How can I determine whether the problem is actually the catalytic converter or another component like the oxygen (O2) sensor? Is there a way to reset the engine control module and monitor if the code returns? What specific tests should I perform before investing in expensive parts or repairs?

Check recent discussions on this same P0420 code for other Toyota owners—there was a post less than two weeks ago. In most cases, the issue is not with the O2 sensor; if it's under warranty, that might be an option to explore.

Hi Jeff, you mentioned 'it’s never the O2 sensor'—are you referring specifically to the air-fuel (AF) sensor located before the catalytic converter, or are you treating that as the same component? If so, is this still valid even after over 100,000 miles? Thanks for the clarification!

I'm confident—air-fuel or O2 sensors (regardless of terminology) are responsible in less than 0.1% of P0420 cases across all vehicles. If a P0420 code appears, it means the oxygen sensors can generate signals and function properly. As long as their heaters are working, they're operating correctly. The code indicates that the catalytic converter has failed or is not reaching the proper temperatures needed for effective chemical reactions inside the converter.

The downstream (post-catalyst) O2 sensor measures how well the catalytic converter stores oxygen. If both sensors are switching at similar rates, it indicates the converter is not functioning properly. As Jeff noted, in nearly all cases, a P0420 code points directly to a failing catalytic converter.
