BMW 1996 328IS Check Engine Light: P1188 and P1189 Fault Code Explanation and Repair Guide

Model: BMW Fault Code: P1188 Posted: 2010-10-11 15:26

My check engine light turned on today on my 1996 BMW 328IS. I visited a parts store to scan the vehicle and found two fault codes: P1188 and P1189. These codes indicate issues with Sensor 1 in Bank 1 and Bank 2 of the engine's oxygen sensor system. What do these codes mean, and what is the correct way to fix them? Any guidance or troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

Ensure all relevant fuses related to the fuel system and engine sensors are checked and intact, as a blown fuse could contribute to sensor signal issues.

I experienced the same P1188 code on my 1996 BMW 328IS. I replaced the air filter and mass airflow sensor, but the issue persisted. After replacing the fuel pump, the problem was resolved. It's recommended to check the fuel pump as a primary troubleshooting step when encountering this fault code.
