2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer P1400 Code: Cold Start Emission Control System Fault

Model: blazer Fault Code: P1400 Posted: 2012-08-14 23:30

I'm experiencing a Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1400 on my 2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer with a 4.2L 6-cylinder engine. The vehicle shows no dashboard warnings, and there are no other active error codes. I have not made any modifications to the engine or intake/exhaust systems. DTC P1400 — Cold Start Emission Reduction Control System — indicates that the vehicle's exhaust energy model during a cold start does not match the expected values. This diagnostic monitors key parameters including engine speed, spark timing, throttle position, airflow per cylinder, coolant temperature, engine runtime, park/neutral status, and vehicle speed. The code triggers under specific conditions: a detected cold start, vehicle speed below 2 km/h, idle state with no pedal input, airflow exceeding 80 mg/cylinder, and absence of other related DTCs (such as P0101–P0651, P1101, etc.). It runs for up to 15 seconds within the first 70 seconds after startup. When set, the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates and records failure conditions in freeze frame data. The code clears after three consecutive successful diagnostics or after 40 warm-up cycles without failures — though a scan tool can clear it manually. Potential causes include vacuum leaks, restricted air intake, dirty air filters, or exhaust system issues. I've confirmed the engine is not being loaded during startup (e.g., no clutch engagement), and all modifications have been ruled out.

To better assist with diagnosing P1400, please provide: 1) Engine type (e.g., 4.2L V6) 2) Any other active DTCs 3) Modifications to the engine or intake/exhaust system Once you confirm these details, we can proceed with a targeted analysis.

Thanks for the update! I’ve confirmed: 1) Engine: 4.2L 6-cylinder V6 2) No other active DTCs; no dashboard warning lights 3) No modifications to engine, intake, or exhaust components. I’m now waiting for further insights on how to resolve the P1400 code specifically.

Hi — thank you for confirming the details. Based on your vehicle’s specs and absence of other codes, we can focus on potential intake or exhaust system issues that may interfere with cold-start emission control. I recommend checking for vacuum leaks, a dirty air filter, or water intrusion in the intake or exhaust systems as next steps.

Official Service Manual Reference: 2007 GMC Truck Envoy - 2WD | Envoy, Rainier, TrailBlazer, Ascender (VIN S/T) Service Manual | Document ID: 1655997 DTC P1400 — Cold Start Emission Reduction Control System: - Monitors engine parameters during cold start to build an exhaust energy model. - Requires idle state, no pedal input, and airflow >80 mg/cylinder. - Runs only once per trip during the first 70 seconds of startup. Conditions for setting: Actual exhaust energy ≠ expected model. Action: MIL illuminates; failure data stored in freeze frame. Clearing conditions: - 3 consecutive successful diagnostics - 40 warm-up cycles without failure (no other emission DTCs) - Manual clear via scan tool Diagnostic tips: - Avoid engine load during first 70 seconds of startup (e.g., no clutch engagement). - Allow engine to cool, then monitor Cold Startup parameter — should show 'Yes'. - After starting and idling for at least 2 minutes, DTC P1400 should run and pass. Recommended checks: • Air intake system: inspect for damage, restricted airflow, dirty filter, vacuum leaks, or intake manifold leaks • Exhaust system: check for water intrusion, exhaust leaks, or modifications that alter exhaust flow
